Each year I love paddling our lakes looking for newly hatched chicks in early July. Some lakes see frequent kayak traffic and the loons are more trusting. You should not approach closer than 100 yards from a loon with chicks per ethical guidelines, but it is permissible to let them swim closer to you. You can see these loons did so (I was using a 600mm lens) and were perfectly at peace with my presence. Hopefully you can stay cool and peaceful this July too!
