June

This view from Mt. Pierce 4310' treats the northbound Appalachian Trail thru hiker to a preview of the longest sustained stretch of above treeline travel on the entire Georgia to Maine journey. On this summer morning, I got to experience this spot like a thru hiker. I had camped a mile south of here and started the steep mile hike in the dark (4am!). The reward was having this usually busy with day hikers spot all to myself a daylight gradually lit up the land. My only company were a few thru hikers who had arrived for sunrise too. I could see their obvious joy at reaching this point in golden light by walking the long way, from Georgia.
